Seven Photographs that Changed Fashion

15Jan2009 Uncategorized

Last night I watch on BBC Four very nice programme titled Seven Photographs that Changed Fashion. The programme was hosted by Rankin, world’s leading fashion and portrait photographer. While recreating seven images, which in Rankin’s opinion made an big impact in the fashion photography, he takes an audience through a brief history of the fashion photography. Rankin re-staged the most famous photographs taken by great photographers such as Cecil Beaton, Erwin Blumenfeld, Richard Avedon, Helmut Newton, Herb Ritts, David Bailey and Guy Bourdin. He uses digital camera but he also goes back in time and uses cameras used by authors of the images he recreates.

Besides great photographers, you can also find in the programme great models such as Heidi Klum, Erin O’Connor, Jade Parfitt, Sophie Ellis-Bextor, Tuuli Shipster, Mollie Gondhi, Daphne Guinness and David Gandy. All helped Rankin in achieving his goal.

The programme will be broadcast again today at 00:50. If that is too late for you, no worries. BBC Four plans to broadcast it on Saturday, 17th, at 21:00.

The War in Iraq, Through Photographers’ Eyes

8Jan2009 Uncategorized

Today I watched The War in Iraq, Through Photographers’ Eyes. It is excellent document about war in Iraq and Afghanistan seen by war photographers. The movie shows work of the VII Photo Agency founders.

I liked comments and photographers’ reflections about things they saw and photographed in Iraq and Afghanistan, especially about civilians and their reactions when American forces came to Iraq. The document highlights cultural differences between West and Middle East. Things that American took for granted were not understood by citizens of Iraq and Afghanistan.

I highly recommend to watch it if you have a chance.

It is my second document I recently watched about war photography. Few weeks ago I watched War Photographer about work of James Nachtwey. I must say that film moved my heart. It is “must see” by any photographer.

Walk near Ladybower Reservoir

I love and hate Christmas. I love it for amazing atmosphere it generates around us. Everyone looks happier, there seems to be less to worry. And for most, Christmas time brings families together. I hate it for for amount of food served everywhere :) I put a lot on weight for last 3 weeks as usual over Christmas period :)

We started New Year with resolution of loosing weight, I mostly do it because I feel much better and it is much easier to tie my shoes :) and it is our wedding in June (what a stupid reason to loose weight ;p)

Last Friday Madzia and I had day off from work. We quickly decided that it is time to have a walk somewhere in Peak District. This time we went to Ladybower Reservoir. It is excellent place to visit, and offers lots of short walks, very good for people caring a bit more on themselves than usual.

Here are two pictures of Magda from that day. More to come :)
